Kanyakumari is India's southernmost land tip — a cape at 8°04'N where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet. The town's rocks and temples sit at the peninsula's end, 87 km south of Thiruvananthapuram.

History & culture

The cape is named for the Kumari (virgin goddess) Devi temple — one of the Shakti Peethas. The Vivekananda Rock (1892 meditation site) and the 40 m Thiruvalluvar statue (2000) frame the modern memorial era.
