Kaas is a brief, uncanny spectacle: for a few weeks in September, the grey plateau turns into a carpet of flowers in every shade — pink, yellow, white, purple — so dense that the ground disappears under them. The blooms are tiny and intense, best seen on your knees with a guide pointing out the orchid and the insectivorous sundew. The wind blows across the open plateau, the clouds roll low over the escarpment, and the view over the Krishna valley adds a soft blue backdrop to all that colour. There's a museum-like hush among the visitors, as if everyone is aware they are seeing something that will be gone in weeks.
