Geography & terrain
Jog Falls is India's highest plunge waterfall — the Sharavathi river drops 253 m in a single unbroken fall at the Western Ghats' edge in Karnataka's Shivamogga district. The four streams (Raja, Roarer, Rocket, Rani) converge in the gorge below.
History & culture
The falls have been Karnataka's signature sight since the colonial era — the 1890s honeymoon hotel (the old Jog Falls Guest House) and the hydro project that shares the river's power mark its modern story.

Frequently asked questions
When are the falls at their best?
July–September after the monsoon fills the Sharavathi — full-throttle views from the platform.
Can I visit in summer?
Yes, but the flow is minimal by April–May — check the dam releases before planning.
How do I get to Jog Falls?
Rail to Sagara/Talaguppa (35 km), or drive from Bengaluru (380 km / 7 h) and Shimoga (100 km).
You hear Jog before you see it — a low, continuous thunder that builds as you approach the viewpoint, and then the river is simply gone, a white column dropping out of sight into the mist of the gorge. When the dam releases, the force is physical: spray rains on the viewing platform, and the roar makes conversation impossible, which is exactly right. The walk down the steps to the base is a descent into a different world — wet, green, loud, with rainbows forming and dissolving in the spray. Shimoga afterwards is a calm return: the Tunga's clear water, the temple bells, a town that measures its day by the river. It's a weekend of water in its most dramatic and most peaceful forms, one after the other.
