Geography & terrain

Jodhpur sits at the doorstep of the Thar Desert in western Rajasthan, spread at the foot of the rocky ridge that carries Mehrangarh. The old city climbs the sandstone slope beneath the fort in a tangle of indigo lanes — Brahmpuri's blue houses, Gulab Sagar and Ranisar lakes, the clock tower and Sardar Market at its base — while the new city spreads east toward Umaid Bhawan's hill and the airport. Mandore lies 9 km north (the pre-Jodhpur Rathore capital), Osian's desert temples 60 km to the north-west, and the Marwar countryside — desert scrub, khejri trees and wind-carved rock — begins at the city limit.

History & culture

The Rathore clan of Mandore, claiming descent from the Sun god through Rama's son Lava, ruled Marwar from the old capital until Rao Jodha — advised that his hilltop citadel would outlast the plain — founded Jodhpur on 12 May 1459, planting his new fort on the 'Mountain of Birds'. Mehrangarh grew over five centuries under rulers who added its victory gates (Fattehpol and Jayapol commemorate the 1800s battles against Jaipur), its zenana courts and its battle-scarred ramparts. The city prospered on the caravan routes of the Thar; Jaswant Singh II (d. 1895) was honoured with the marble Jaswant Thada, and in the 20th century Maharaja Umaid Singh raised the art-deco Umaid Bhawan as a famine-work palace. Today the Mehrangarh Museum Trust curates the fort's collections — one of India's great museum operations — while RIFF and the Marwar Festival keep the traditions alive in its courtyards.

Fly: Jodhpur Airport (JDH) is the closest — 3–10 km from the fort with daily flights from Delhi and Mumbai (Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet) and connections onward. Jaipur (340 km) and Delhi (620 km) airports handle the overflow; the drive from Jaipur takes ~5.5 hours.
