Geography & terrain
Jaisalmer rises from the Thar desert at Rajasthan's western edge, 100 km from Pakistan. The 12th-century fort sits on Trikuta hill, its golden sandstone walls catching light through the day — the town below was built entirely within the fort's shadow for 600 years.
History & culture
Founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, the fort is a living citadel — unlike Rajasthan's other forts, thousands still live inside its walls, with their own palaces, temples and markets. The camel trade routes that built the town are now followed by the Desert Festival and the Sam dunes circuit.
