Itanagar is Arunachal Pradesh's hill capital, set in the green bowl of the Papum Pare district, surrounded on all sides by forested hills and reached by a single climbing highway from Banderdewa — a city of government buildings, bazaars and tribal neighbourhoods, with Gekar Sinyi lake and the ruins of Ita Fort within its bounds.
