Hunder lies in the Nubra valley of Ladakh at about 3,048 m, 120 km from Leh — the desert village of the Nubra, its cold sand dunes and the Shyok river set between the Karakoram's walls in the region's high north.

History & culture

The village's story runs with the Nubra's history of the trade route to the Karakoram pass — the old caravanserai of the silk route's merchants, with the Diskit monastery's rule over the valley and the village's Buddhist life; the Bactrian camels of the region, with the modern tourism of the dunes and the Sand Dunes camp, gives Hunder its desert-village character within the Nubra circuit.
