Geography & terrain

Harishchandragad lies in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra at about 1,424 m, 90 km from Nashik and 160 km from Pune — the hill fortress of the Sahyadri, its cliff edge and the lake set above the region's valleys in the Kalsubai country.

The fort's history runs from the 6th-century-era legends of the region through the Maratha and the Mughal periods — the fort's capture in the 17th century and its role in the region's defence; the fort's fame is the Konkan Kada — the great cliff of its western edge, with the Kedareshwar cave's Shiva linga and the fort's old structures, giving Harishchandragad its place among the Sahyadri's great trekking forts.
