Geography & terrain

Gulmarg ('meadow of flowers') sits at 2,650 m in the Pir Panjal range, 52 km from Srinagar. The bowl-shaped meadow is ringed by snow slopes that top out at Apharwat's 4,174 m — the entire Gondola ski circuit is visible from the valley floor.

History & culture

A Mughal pleasure ground first — Jehangir is said to have picked the name — it became the British-era summer seat for Srinagar's elite. In 1927 the first ski club in Asia opened here, and the Gondola (opened 1998) remains India's highest cable car.
