Geography & terrain
Gokarna sits on Karnataka's Konkan coast, 60 km south of Goa, at the mouth of the Gangavali river — a palm-fringed cape of four beaches (Kudle, Om, Half Moon, Paradise) reached on foot over a 5 km trail from town.
History & culture
Gokarna's Shiva temple (the 4th-century Mahabaleshwar, home of the Atmalinga) is one of the most sacred in Karnataka — the town's pilgrimage lane runs from the temple to the beach trailhead. The 1960s hippie-to-tourist arc followed the temple economy.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gokarna still a quiet beach town?
Kudle and Om are busy in season; Half Moon and Paradise still deliver the quiet Gokarna of old.
How do I get to Gokarna?
Train to Gokarna Road (12 km), or bus along the Goa–Mangaluru coastal route. Goa is 2.5 h north.
What's the best season?
October–March for swimming and trail days. June–September is dramatic but the sea is rough.
Gokarna is a town that does both sacred and barefoot without contradiction: in the morning you hear temple bells and the chanting of pilgrims heading to Mahabaleshwar; by noon you're eating fresh catch at a shack overlooking the sea. The walk between the beaches is a short trek through casuarina and rocky headlands, and each cove opens with a different mood — Kudle's easygoing calm, Om's open curve, Half Moon's cliff-framed seclusion. At night, the sea is loud and the sky full of stars, and the shacks play music that drifts along the water. It's the rare Indian beach town that still feels like a village that happens to have a temple, a surfboard and an ocean.
