History & culture
The city was founded in 1025 by the Chola king Rajendra I after his northern campaigns — the new capital named for the Ganga he brought south, with the great Brihadeeswarar temple of the 11th century as the city's masterpiece; the temple's sculptures and the massive vimana, with the city's later decline into the village of today, make Gangaikonda Cholapuram a UNESCO World Heritage site of the Great Living Chola Temples.
