Elephanta Caves lie on the Elephanta island of Mumbai harbour, about 10 km east of the Gateway of India — the rock-cut cave temples of the 6th century, their great Shiva sculpture and the halls set in the island's forested hills.

History & culture

The caves were carved in the 5th–6th century as the Shaiva sanctuary of the Kalachuri-era craftsmen — the great three-headed Trimurti and the panels of Shiva's legends of the island's main cave; the island's Portuguese-era name from the elephant statue, with the caves' UNESCO World Heritage status since 1987, gives Elephanta its place among India's rock-cut masterpieces.
