Edakkal Caves lie in the Ambukuthi hills of the Wayanad district in Kerala, 25 km from Kalpetta and 35 km from Sulthan Bathery — the rock-shelter of the pre-historic engravings, its two-chambered split and the hill's views set above the coffee country of the district.

History & culture

The caves were discovered in 1894 by the British-era collector Fawcett — the rock engravings of the Neolithic to the historic age, with the human figures, the wheels and the animal marks of the 'Edakkal script' that remain undeciphered; the site's layers from the prehistoric to the modern graffiti, with the legends of the local people, give the caves their unique window into the region's deep past.
