Geography & terrain

Dudhwa National Park lies in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, 220 km from Lucknow and 60 km from Palia — the terai country of the Indo-Nepal border, its sal forests and grasslands set along the Suheli and Mohana rivers near the Nepal frontier.

History & culture

The park was established in 1977 and declared a tiger reserve in 1987 — the terai's great forest of the north, with its story of the 1984 rhino reintroduction from Assam and the park's swamp deer and tigers; the adjoining Kishanpur sanctuary and the Dudhwa's role in the terai's conservation give the park its place among India's great grasslands, with the river-safari country of the region's old hunting estates completing its history.
