Diskit lies in the Nubra valley of Ladakh at about 3,100 m, 120 km from Leh over the Khardung La — the valley's main town, its white monastery and the sand dunes' edge set on the Shyok river's bank amid the Trans-Himalayan desert.
History & culture
The Diskit monastery was founded in the 14th century by the Lama of the Gelug school, making it the oldest monastery of the Nubra valley; the town's role as the valley's capital settlement, with the newer 106-foot Maitreya statue and the monastery's treasury and murals, gives Diskit its centuries of Ladakhi Buddhist life, and the region's caravan-past on the old Silk Route runs through the valley's story.
