Digboi sits in the low hills of Tinsukia district where Assam's oil country meets the Arunachal forest — a tidy colonial-era oil town around the diggings that made it famous, its pumps, tanks and the golf course laid out among the first oilfields of Asia.

History & culture

Oil was struck here in the 1880s and the Assam Oil Company's refinery opened in 1901 — the first in Asia and among the oldest working refineries in the world; the town's century of continuous pumping, the old well sites and the Digboi Centenary Museum make the place a living industrial-heritage site.
