Geography & terrain

Dibrugarh stands on the Brahmaputra's north bank in Upper Assam, 430 km east of Guwahati — the region's tea-and-oil capital, its green town wrapped by some of Assam's largest tea estates, with the Dibru river and the riverine Dibru-Saikhowa sanctuary on its door.

History & culture

The town grew on tea in the 19th century — the region's first plantation belt feeding the London auctions — and later on oil after the Digboi fields came in; today it is the launch pad for Upper Assam's tea gardens, the river islands and the Arunachal border roads, with the river's steamer history still visible in its old ghats.
