Dhar lies in the Malwa plateau of Madhya Pradesh at 580 m, 110 km west of Indore — an old town of the hills' edge, its fort and the medieval city set in the cotton and wheat country of the Malwa.

History & culture

Dhar was a capital of the Paramara kings of Malwa — the 11th-century seat of Raja Bhoja's learning, whose Bhojshala and the town's inscriptions survive from the golden age; the later Muslim governors' fort and the town's Jain and Rajput layers, with the court poet Bana's traditions, give Dhar its long medieval story, and the fort's ruins now crown the old city.
