Geography & terrain

Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary spreads across the Digboi–Margherita country of Tinsukia district — 111 sq km of the 'Amazon of the East', the lowland rainforest of the Dehing river at the Assam–Arunachal boundary, its canopy dense enough to hold the region's wildest birds.

History & culture

Carved from the old reserves of the oil-country in 2004 and proposed ever since for national-park status, the sanctuary protects the last great tract of lowland tropical rainforest in Assam; its history is timber first, oil towns around, and now the slow defence of the forest that gave the Dehing river its name.
