Deepor Beel is the great wetland of Guwahati's west — a 4,000-ha reed-and-water lake between the city and the hills, one of Assam's noted Ramsar wetlands, its birdlife crowding the water's edge within sight of the metropolis.

History & culture

Sacred and practical for centuries — the beel's fishing and reed economy fed the region, and the wetland was declared a Ramsar site in 2002 to shield the winter fowl; the city's growth now presses against its edges, making the beel a conservation story as much as a visiting ground.
