Geography & terrain

Dampa Tiger Reserve lies in the hills of Mamit district in western Mizoram, 130 km from Aizawl and 25 km from the Bangladesh border — 550 sq km of the state's largest forest, its elephant country and the river valleys held by the reserve's gates.

History & culture

Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1985 and a tiger reserve in 1994, the Dampa forest has guarded Mizoram's wild-west frontier — the tigers and elephants of the border hills and the tribal communities' forest life within the reserve's history; its later story is the conservation and ecotourism of the Mizoram tiger country.
