Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary protects the mangrove forest where the Godavari's distributaries meet the Bay of Bengal, 20 km from Kakinada on the delta coast — a tidal world of mangrove channels, mud banks and estuarine islets running west toward the Coringa river's mouth.

History & culture

Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1978, the forest's mangroves sheltered the delta's fishing and reed-cutting life long before; its modern fame rests on the saltwater crocodile program — the sanctuary hatches and releases estuarine crocs into the channels — and on a history scarred by the 1977 cyclone the district still remembers.
