Geography & terrain

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the rain-shadow of the Western Ghats in Idukki district of Kerala, 60 km from Munnar — 90 sq km of dry thorn and riverine forest along the Chinnar river's valley, at the border of the two states' highland country.

History & culture

Declared in 1984 to hold the dry-land species of the ghats' rain-shadow, the sanctuary's forest and riverine stretches have become the home of Kerala's grizzled giant squirrel study and the rehabilitation herd of elephants, with the indigenous communities' old firings and the bamboo groves marking the valley's settlement history.
