Chilika Lake spreads along the Odisha coast between Puri and Ganjam, 60 km from Bhubaneswar — Asia's largest brackish lagoon at 1,100 sq km, its water, islands and bird marshlands held behind the sea's sand bar.

History & culture

The lagoon's history is its great ecosystems — the winter migrants' marshlands, the Irrawaddy dolphins of the channel and the islands' old temples (Kalijai, Satapada's approaches); a Ramsar site and a UNESCO-recognized lagoon, Chilika's story of restoration from the 1990s remains the great case of the wetlands' recovery.
