Geography & terrain

Sohra (Cherrapunji) clings to the southern rim of the Meghalaya plateau at ~1,480 m, where the plains of Bangladesh begin 1,400 m below. The escarpment catches the monsoon head-on — which is why this tiny town has twice held the world's wettest-place record (26,471 mm in 1861).

History & culture

Sohra is the seat of the Khasi people's traditional government, the Syiemship. The area's British-era name came from the Sohra trading fairs; today it's the hub for Khasi living-culture villages like Mawlynnong, named Asia's cleanest village in 2003.

Heavily Jun–Sep, misty Oct–Feb, and surprisingly dry-sunny Mar–May — the best window for the root-bridge trek.

Is the double-decker bridge trek hard?

3,500 steps down and back up — 2–3 hours each way. Doable with kids if you start early and carry water; skip it in full monsoon.

How do I get there?

Fly or train to Guwahati, drive ~4 h through Shillong. Sohra is a 2 h drive from Shillong.
