Geography & terrain

Charar-e-Sharief lies in the Doodhganga valley of Kashmir's Budgam district, 35 km from Srinagar — the white shrine of the Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, set among the alpine meadows and the Charar hills.

History & culture

The shrine grew around the 15th-century saint — the Nund Rishi of Kashmir's Sufi order, whose teachings of the valley's Bhakti-Sufi age made Charar-e-Sharief the pilgrimage of the Rishi order; the modern shrine with its silver doors and saffron dome carries the saint's legacy, rebuilt after the devastating 1995 fire.
