Chandragiri rises 13 km west of Tirupati — a fortified town on a rocky spur of the hill country, with the 16th-century Raja Mahal palace at its foot and the old fort's walls and towers climbing the ridge above, all wrapped in a moat and palm-flat land.
History & culture
Chandragiri was the Vijayanagara empire's last capital — after Hampi fell in 1565, the Aravidu dynasty ruled from here from the 16th century, and the Raja Mahal (c. 1570s, under Saluva Narayana's line) served as their court; the treaty ceding the town to Mughal power in 1646 ended the line, leaving a fortified ghost-city of true imperial weight.
