Geography & terrain

Chandni Chowk runs from the Red Fort's Lahore gate to the Fatehpuri mosque in old Delhi, at the heart of the walled city — one of the subcontinent's oldest bazaar streets, its galleries, havelis and food lanes packed into the Mughal capital's grid.

History & culture

Built by Shah Jahan's daughter Jahanara in the 17th century as the avenue of the new Shahjahanabad, the chowk became the empire's grand market — the havelis of the merchant houses, the Paranthe Wali Gali's eateries and the Khari Baoli spice market carrying the old capital's trading age into the modern century.
