Champawat sits at 1,610 metres in the Kali river's valley of Uttarakhand's eastern hills, 55 km from Pithoragarh — a former capital of the Chand kings, its temples and the Baleshwar complex set among the forested ridges of the Himalayan foothills.

The town was the Chand kings' capital for the region's centuries before the seat moved to Almora — the Baleshwar and Nageshwar temples carved in the old style carrying the royal age; the tiger country beyond the town and the Nagnath temple's environs give the old capital its forested setting.
