Geography & terrain

Bylakuppe spreads on the Coorg plateau of Karnataka, 100 km from Mysuru and 5 km from Kushalnagar — India's largest Tibetan settlement, its great monasteries rising from the coffee-country green at the hills' edge.

History & culture

The settlement grew from the 1960s when the Tibetan exiles established their first Indian camps here — the town soon held the institutions of the exile's learning: Namdroling's three gompa halls, Sera monastery's debating grounds and the smaller monasteries of the region; the settlements' artists and schools have since made Bylakuppe the Tibetan heart of south India.
