Geography & terrain

Borra Caves open in the Ananthagiri hills of the Eastern Ghats, 90 km from Visakhapatnam on the Araku road — a limestone cavern system lined with stalactites and stalagmites, with the Gosthani river rising from its depths and the forest decking the hill above its single entrance.

History & culture

Discovered in 1807 by the geologist William King George during the railway survey, the cave was already a local shrine — the village god shrine inside its chamber, fed by the water-filtered drips, still sits where the Kondakorava tribals worshipped; the decorated electric-lit sections opened to visitors in the 1990s.
