Geography & terrain

Bomdila sits at about 2,530 m on a high saddle of the Eastern Himalaya in West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh — an apple-and-pine town of the Monpa people at the knot of the Tezpur–Tawang highway, with snow peaks showing through the seasonal fog.

History & culture

A Monpa trading and fort-town of the old border world, Bomdila grew with the road to Tawang after 1951; its monasteries — the main Bomdila Gompa (1965) and the Gentse and Upper shrines — keep the Gelugpa Buddhism of the region vivid, and its craft centres preserve the Monpa carpet-weaving lineages. The town is also the memorial stop of the 1962 war's memory.
