Geography & terrain

Bidar lies on the north-eastern lip of Karnataka, 150 km from Hyderabad and 650 km from Bengaluru — a black-soil plateau town ringed by the ruins-laden ramparts of its great fort, on the old Deccan's Bahmani heartland.

History & culture

The seat of the Bahmani sultanate (1427–1527) and the Barid Shahi successors, Bidar kept the most complete fort of the Deccan — moats, gates, palaces and the famous 'smithy gate', with the Rangin Mahal's Persian tile-work inside. The Mahmud Gawan madrasa (1472) is a three-storey Islamic college of UNESCO-candidate status, while the Ashtur royal tombs and the district's bidri metalwork (the silver-inlay craft) carry the town's fame beyond its walls.
