Bhuj is the walled capital of Kutch district, Gujarat, 90 km from Gandhidham on the western edge of the great Rann — a low desert-graced town of forts, lakes and weaving lanes set below the Bhujia hill, and the gate to the Kutch craft world.

History & culture

Founded as Kutch's capital in the 16th century by the Jadeja rulers, Bhuj layered the region's craft and palace history — the mid-1700s Aina Mahal glass palace, the Indo-Gothic Prag Mahal (1870s), and the Bengal-tiger museum of Maharao Khengarji; since the 2001 earthquake the town has rebuilt while its craft bazaars (bandhani, embroidery, Rogan painting at Nirona) kept their old depth.
