Bhubaneswar spreads across the coastal plain of Khordha district, Odisha, 45 km from the Bay of Bengal shores at Puri — a city of centuries of temples ringed by modern avenues, with the Kuakhai river to the east and green tank-and-grove clusters scattered through its old core.

History & culture

The 'temple city of India' was the ancient capital of Kalinga — Ashoka's conquest was fought on these plains (the Dhauli edicts lie 8 km south) — and its sacred core grew through the 7th–13th centuries under the Somavamsi and Ganga kings: the great Lingaraj complex (11th century), the 62-shrine Mukteswar cluster, and the rock-cut caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri (2nd century BC) record the Jain kings who preceded them. The Kalinga war became the pivot of Buddhist emperor Ashoka's conversion, putting this city at the moral heart of Indian history.
