Bhongir Fort (Bhuvanagiri) sits on a single egg-shaped rock outcrop rising abruptly from the flat Deccan plateau east of Hyderabad, Telangana — a walled hill-fort about 50 km from the city, on the Warangal highway at the town of Bhongir, the rock's smooth flanks making it a striking bull's-eye against the plains.

History & culture

Built by the Chalukya king Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI in the 11th century as a hill-refuge on the trade-routes, the fort hosted successive Deccan powers — Kakatiya, Bahmani, Qutb Shahi and Mughal occupants left their marks on its gates and cisterns; its famously steep defensive wall with the big 'Bhongir' niche and the later Nizam-era outskirts complete a thousand-year story of the plateau's wars.
