Geography & terrain

Bhojpur, 28 km south of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, is a village on the Betwa-side hill country where the great unfinished Shiva temple of Raja Bhoj stands on a sun-baked terrace — a colossus of limestone blocks on the Malwa plateau's forest edge.

History & culture

Built in the 11th century by the Paramara king Bhoja — the scholar-king of Malwa — the Bhojeshwar temple was never completed: its giant dome, the largest single-stone span attempted in medieval India, was left open to the sky. The sanctum's 7.5-metre Shiva lingam (about 2.3 m diameter) ranks among the largest in the world, and the crane-trench on the hill still holds the machines of its builders.
