Geography & terrain

Bhitarkanika National Park sits in the delta country of Kendrapara district, Odisha, where the Brahmani-Baitarani rivers braid into the Bay of Bengal — a 672-sq-km maze of mangrove-lined creeks, mudflats and estuaries around the Bhitarkanika river, entered by boat from the villages of Khola or Dangamal.

History & culture

The forest's roots are royal — the erstwhile Rajnagar kingdom held the delta's mangroves as its hunting-and-timber reserve; the sanctuary was declared in 1975 and upgraded to a national park in 1998, famous for the world's largest congregation of saltwater crocodiles and the adjacent Gahirmatha beach, the prime nesting shore of the olive ridley turtle.
