Geography & terrain

Bhimashankar sits at about 960 m in the Sahyadri range of Pune district, Maharashtra — a dark deodar-and-ebony forest pocket on the ridge between the Bhima river's source streams, reachable by the winding ghat roads from Pune (110 km) via the Khed ghat or from the Deccan side through Manchar.

History & culture

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the shrine believed to mark where Shiva manifested as a fiery pillar, worshipped here since medieval times under the Yadavas and later patrons; the current temple, in the Hemadpanthi style of the 13th century, carries the typical black-stone carvings of the Deccan, and the surrounding forest was among the first wildlife sanctuaries of Maharashtra (declared 1984) exactly to protect its giant squirrel and remote-tree canopy.
