Geography & terrain

Bhatkal is the coastal trading town of Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, 60 km south of Karwar — a palm-and-creek port at the Sharavati country's mouth, where the sea-facing town is ringed by the green ridges of the western Ghats.

History & culture

A golden-age trading port of the Konkan — the Nawayathi Muslim merchants and the Canara coast's Jain lineage made Bhatkal rich: some of its oldest Digambara Jain bastis (basadis) date from the 15th–16th centuries, and the town's chowks and old houses carry that Indo-Persian port architecture. The Vijayanagara and Nayaka sea-trade eras sailed through its harbour.
