Bhadra Tiger Reserve lies in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, 30 km from Chikmagalur town — 892 sq km of the Western Ghats' dry and moist forest wrapped around the Bhadra river's reservoir, one of India's better-watered reserves.
History & culture
The reserve's forest served the region's timber and hunting past before protection; declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1951 and a Project Tiger reserve in 1998, Bhadra's boundary with the reservoir has famously kept its tiger success — the flooded valleys confine the big cats to the forest, making signs and sightings regular along the ghat roads.
