Geography & terrain

Barren Island rises alone out of the Andaman Sea about 138 km north-east of Port Blair, an uninhabited volcanic mound whose summit crater has erupted intermittently since 1991 — the only active volcano in South Asia, approachable by boat but never by foot.

History & culture

First noted by the British surveyors as a dormant cone, the island startled modern India awake in 1991 after two centuries of quiet; eruptions through 1995, 2005 and 2017 have rebuilt its youth — the crater still glows and steams into the night when the vents are live.
