Geography & terrain

Barpeta is the Vaishnavite town of the north Brahmaputra, 100 km west of Guwahati in the district of the same name — a flat market town of ponds, mosques and the great Barpeta satra, its kirtan halls and temple courts spreading through the centre, with the Manas country on its northern edge.

History & culture

Founded by the saint Madhavdeva in the 16th century, the Barpeta satra became one of Assam's great Vaishnavite centres — its kirtan hall, scriptures and the annual Doul festival still run the town's calendar; the settlement that grew around the satra became a trading town of the river plain, its history split between the monastery's peace and the market's commerce.
