Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary sprawls over 245 km² of undulating sal-and-grass country in Raipur district, Chhattisgarh, mid-way between Raipur and Mahasamund — a plains forest of the Mahanadi basin's eastern fringe threaded by streams and village clearings.
History & culture
Gazetted in 1976, Barnawapara became known for the wild-elephant herd that re-established here from the Odisha side in the 2010s after decades, alongside the sanctuary's long-standing gaur herds. Its name recalls the barna trees (Dalbergia) of these teak-and-dhad forests.
