Barmer is the wool-and-sandstone town of western Rajasthan, 156 km west of Jodhpur near the Thar's edge — laid on golden-brown sandstone bluffs above the fields of the border desert, its bazaar lanes famous for the region's mounds of speckled dye-skeins.

History & culture

The town was the seat of a Paramara-era lineage and later a Rathor princely state — its fort and old city gates carry those stories. The greater fame belongs to the region's crafts: the Barmeri woollen weaves, and the 11th–12th-century ruins of Kiradu, 'the Khajuraho of Rajasthan', 35 km away.
