Geography & terrain

Baratang lies in the middle Andamans on the Andaman Trunk Road between Rangat and Port Blair — an island of mangrove creeks, tidal rivers and volcanic-mud pools. The limestone caves sit inland on the west coast, reached by boat through a serpentine tidal creek.

History & culture

Long a restricted zone because the neighbouring Jarawa tribal reserve spans the island's wilder edge, Baratang opened to visitors as the Trunk Road was settled. Its mud volcanoes — small cones that bubble warm grey mud — are among the few active mud-volcano fields of India.
