Banswara is the river city of south Rajasthan's Mahi basin, 160 km south of Udaipur near the borders with Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh — the 'city of a hundred islands' where the Mahi and its tributaries break the plain into green isles, framed by the Aravalli tail and the Bhil tribal hills.

History & culture

The state of Banswara was carved in the 16th century by a Sisodia offshoot of Mewar and stayed a forested, tribal-influenced Rajput state till 1949. Its Kagdi and Som rivers, the old town's temples, and the Bhil festivals give it a south-Rajasthan character that rarely reaches the tourist road.
