Geography & terrain

Balpakram National Park is a wind-scoured canyon plateau in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya, about 220 km south-west of Shillong, near the Bangladesh border — grass-topped and gorge-cut, named in Garo legend the 'land of spirits' where souls await their journey.

History & culture

The park's reverence goes back to Garo animist belief — a place of the dead entered only with ceremony, where the legendary wise-heroes of the tribe ended their days. Gazetted in the 1980s–90s, Balpakram now protects one of South Asia's most striking river-gorges alongside a rare wildlife troupe.
