Bageshwar is the river-confluence town of Kumaon, Uttarakhand, where the Gomti and Saryu meet in the shadow of the Jhandi Dhar ridge — a green bowl of temples, orchards and market lanes at the trailhead of the Pindari, Kafni and Sunderdhunga treks.

History & culture

Known since the 12th-century records as the seat of the Bagnath temple (the tiger-lord Shiva), Bageshwar flowered as a ritual and trade centre of the Kumaon hill states. Its role as the Pindari trek gateway grew in the 19th century, and today the town's pilgrim-and-porter economy still runs the mountains' old rhythms.
