Geography & terrain

Badami is the red-sandstone bowl town of Bagalkot district, Karnataka, clamped between twin cliffs of the Agastya lake — rock-cut temples carved into the cliff face over a man-made lake in the high, dusty Deccan plateau.

History & culture

The early Chalukya capital (6th–8th centuries) that gave the dynasty its name Vatapi, Badami's four main cave temples — cave 1's dancing Nataraja, cave 2's Vishnu boar, cave 3's ceiling medallions and cave 4's Jain images — are the masterworks of early South Indian rock-cut art. Above town, the Bhootnath temples, the fort and the Malegitti Shivalaya continue the tradition.
